The definition of Social Media is: Websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking.

The definition of Marketing is: The action or business of promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising.

The definition of Social Marketing is: The interaction of a business using websites and applications to interact with users to create and share information about products and services to the benefit of everyone.

OK, I made up the term Social Marketing, but that is what happens when you create a business profile on Social Media and take the time to interact with people. It allows people to ask questions that you answer building their trust and confidence in you and your company, something the other medias are not able to do. With Social Media, customers are able to read postings about your company and interact with you or remain silent. Either way, you're building rapport with them. Some people are more vocal and will ask questions and follow-up questions. No other media allows that kind of interaction.

What are some of the specific things Social Media can do for your business?

Brand

Social Media is the most cost efficient digital marketing methods there is. It increase visibility and engages a broader audience. With the interaction with content, it increases brand awareness. It just takes a few hours per week to increase your exposure.

Traffic

Traffic is most likely limited to your usual customers without Social Media making it difficult reaching outside your loyal customer base. Each social media added is a gateway to your website. The content on your profile is an opportunity to gain customers. Different people search for things different ways and use different social media to find it. By marketing on multiple social media, you are effectively exposing your business to a more variety of clients all over the world.

Improve Search Engine Rankings

Social Media might get your business more traffic, but more effort is needed that just that to increase your ranking. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) ranking is very important to you. The more social media your business is on, the more links to your website you'll have. The more people that go to your website from social media, the higher your SEO ranking may become. Let's put it a different way, when you Google something, how many times have you gone to page two? If your website doesn't show on the first page, you probably need to change your SEO strategy.

Visibility

Every blog post, comment or video could lead viewers to your website and increase traffic. This is where your interaction brings the human factor to your business. It makes people feel they know you, building trust in you and your company. Then if they or some of their friends or family are in need of one of your products or services, they are more likely to mention your business because of the interaction they already had.

Customer Satisfaction

Brand Loyalty

Customer Satisfaction and Brand Loyalty go hand in hand. Social Media isn't just to put your information out there, its a chance to regularly interact with customers, developing a bond with them. The millennial generation is known for being the more brand loyal customer of all. Born between 1980's and early 2000's, millennials are the largest generation in US history. Soon they will be your largest market. They are very technology native and rely on social media for their interactions with others and your business. You need to be involved with them to get that loyalty.

Brand Authority

Where better to demonstrate your expertise on services and products than in social media. People post questions looking for answers and the opportunity for you to respond is huge. If you answer some questions people have or straightened them out on a misunderstanding, how does that make you look? No money involved, just friendly advice, but if they then need that service or product, who do you think they'll think of? All because of your interaction with them.

Cost Effective

Social Media profiles are usually free so what do you have to lose other than some time? The benefits far outweigh any cost involved. Can you think of an easier way to reach hundreds of thousands of customers this easily and at a minimal cost?

Insight

How do you find out what your customer's thought and needs are? Social Media is a natural platform for that to happen. It's not forced, it just happens because that's what social media is for. Reach out for help, understanding, how to do something, other's opinions on something. Where to get or what to ask for. It's all on social media and being a part of that is priceless.

Content is King

When creating the content for your social media, don't just put anything on it. Make it something you feel the public should know. What does your company do or know that others don't? Put out information that will help people. What misconceptions might people have about your service or products? Let them know!! You're bound to get a response which is what you want.
