What is SEO ?

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine's results. In short, you go to a search engine site like Google, Bing, Yahoo, type in what you are looking for and they provide you with a list of results. Sounds easy, right?

Ask yourself a question, “how do these search engines know about all the different sites and pages on the internet (worldwide)? How do they return results back to you in seconds? Have you noticed the better you are at telling a search engine what to look for, the more defined your results will be?

The ranking of websites on search engines is constantly changing. To keep your website at the top of the rankings requires you to constantly work on your ranking because things keep changing on the internet. You may be #1 for a topic and the next week you're down the list. Why?  Every day there are new websites going live, existing websites changing and adding pages and everyone is trying to get their site at the top. On top of this, the search engine companies also change what they are looking for and how they rank websites so no one really knows the exact answer on how to be ranked #1.  It's like trying to hit a moving target all the time. There are actual people whose careers are making sure a company stays on top of the SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages).

  2. Provide hints for web developers to add into each page to help assist search engines find the information about the page.
  3. They use crawling bots to go through all the sites on the internet to catalog the website and its pages.
  4. The folder structure of a website can help a search engine about the layout of the website.
  5. Website sitemap can assist a search engine for the site's layout
  6. Provide a second sitemap in a format that is more easily understood by the search engines (XML). This can also help explain how things are setup for the site to a Search Engine.
  7. Google has multiple logarithms for doing their ranking and they keep changing how they work all the time so no one can stay #1 all the time.
  8. Number of hits a page or website receives also plays a part in their ranking.
  9. Search engines don’t use “menus? as much as direct links on pages to go from page A to page B.
  10. Some other things looked at are: indexing, meta tags, logarithms, backlinks, spam, MFAs, and inconsistencies in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages)

Designing and Organizing your Website for SEO

  1. Each Search Engine Company provides hints for ways to code and organize a website to assist the search engine in finding the information.
  2. The title in the browser tab is used as part of the search criteria.
  3. Putting meta tags inside a page's code tell more about the page to search engines. Things like a description of what the purpose of the page is for (snippet)
  4. Headings inside a page also assist in telling a search engine how the page itself is structured.
  5. Text links from one page to another are better than just a menu for navigation. Search engines can use the text links to see how pages point to each other.

  3. To keep on top, you must constantly be grooming your website for SEO.
  4. SEO is definitely something you need to pay attention to if you want customers to find your website.
